How to make press-on nails last

Prep, sizing, glue versus adhesive tabs, and gentle removal: everything you need for a salon-looking press-on manicure at home.

Press-on nails can look as polished as a salon manicure. How long they stay on comes down to prep and fit.

Prep

  1. Start with clean, dry nails. Remove any old polish.
  2. Gently push back the cuticles and lightly buff the shine off the nail surface.
  3. Wipe each nail with an alcohol pad or nail dehydrator to remove oils. Do not touch them afterwards.

Fit

Lay out a nail for each finger before you start. Choose the size that covers the nail from side to side without touching the skin; if you are between two sizes, the smaller one usually stays on better.

Glue or adhesive tabs?

Adhesive tabs are gentle and easy to remove, ideal for a few days or a special occasion. Nail glue holds longer, often up to around two weeks depending on your nails and daily routine.

Apply at a slight angle from the cuticle down, then press firmly for 20 to 30 seconds. Avoid long soaks in hot water for the first couple of hours.

Removing them

Never pry them off. Soak your fingertips in warm, soapy water with a little oil for 10 to 15 minutes, then gently lift from the side. Finish with cuticle oil and hand cream.
