Matte, satin or gloss: choosing your lip finish
What each lip finish looks and feels like, how long it lasts, and how to prep lips so matte stays comfortable and gloss stays put.
The same shade can look completely different in a different finish. Here is what to expect from each.
Matte
Flat, velvety and long-wearing. Liquid mattes are the most transfer-resistant. Because mattes show texture, prep matters: exfoliate gently, apply balm, then blot before you start. If a matte feels dry, a thin layer of balm in the centre of the lips softens it without losing the look.
Satin
A soft sheen somewhere between matte and gloss. Satin formulas are usually the most comfortable to wear all day and the easiest to apply without a mirror.
Gloss
High shine that catches the light and makes lips look fuller. Gloss is forgiving to apply but needs topping up through the day. Wear it alone, or dab it over lipstick for a glossy colour.
Sheer tints and balms
A wash of colour with a natural finish, ideal for every day and for anyone new to lip colour.
Shimmer, metallic and glitter
Light-reflecting finishes for evenings and celebrations. Pat them on with a fingertip for the most even sparkle.
Try colours first in the Beauty Mirror, then compare finishes on each product page.
